What is Botox?

Botox is the brand name of a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. At low doses, it is effective at providing controlled muscle relaxation to manage certain medical ailments and for cosmetic purposes. In 2002, the FDA approved the same drug (under the label Botox Cosmetic) for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines on the forehead, wrinkle lines around the eyes, and wrinkles seen between the brows in patients age 18-65. It is also approved for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating under the arms) Currently, there are 3 drugs that are FDA approved that have similar preparations and work in the same manner as Botox.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox, or any of the equivalent botulinum toxins, blocks the nerve signal to the muscle at the level of the neuromuscular junction. This limits the ability of the muscle to forcefully contract and causes resting muscle relaxation. This cause wrinkles created by those tightening muscles to relax and soften. The wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity or sagging of aging skin are not responsive to Botox injection. During treatment, very low doses of the botulinum toxin are injected into the body of the numerous facial muscles responsible for creating the wrinkles.

How Soon Does Botox Work?

Although some patients may notice near immediate results, it typically takes 3-7 days for the injected Botox to take full effect.

How Long Does Botox Last?

The results of treatment, or effect of Botox, will last up to six months in most patients. As muscle action gradually returns, the patient will notice slow progressive return of wrinkles previously treated. This is usually an indication of timing for repeat treatment if desired by the patient. Over time with repeated treatments, the muscles can actually atrophy (get smaller) and the prominence of wrinkles may become less.

What are Side Effects of Botox?

The most common side effect following injection of Botox is slight bleeding at the injection site, bruising, and temporary eyelid droop. Occasionally patients may experience temporary dry mouth, dry eyes, headache, fatigue, puffy eyelids, muscle soreness, or blurry vision.
